What if the evening news was interactive and on demand?
I’m online 24/7, I read news magazines, I watch the evening national news on a daily basis and I still feel uniformed. I avoid the 24/7 news channels (FoxNews, CNN etc.) because I feel like they are just filling time. I believe the 24/7 news channels don’t have very much time to verify their sources and usually just end up filling time with a discussion panel of “experts” jibberjabbering to pander to their audience’s political views.
I really like the idea of sitting back and listening to a host and a news team recapping the biggest events of the day. Reading just feels like work to me at the end of the day. During the nightly news there are some stories that I am not that personally interested in that get a lot of air time, and they end up skimming over a lot of stories that I personally believe are big issues that deserve deeper analysis. Joke and Biagio’s post on interactive fiction ended up provoking an idea about another possible format for TV news. What if the evening news was interactive and on demand? The evening news could have “Choose Your Own Adventure” buttons in a lower third which would enable viewers to custom tailor their news info. Viewers could decide if they want the touch/skim version of an event, or they could just press a button and watch a longer in-depth analysis of an event. The long tail could be incorporated too. Viewers could delve in to deep analysis of niche topics in their own custom tailored news programs.
Of course the current set top boxes couldn’t support interactive video on demand news, and even if interactive video on demand news was possible news organizations would have to crank out a lot more content too. But Addressable TV(ads served up based on your viewing habits) is on the horizon and there are plenty of online video creators that could cheaply produce news segments to fill the demand in the niches. All of the data gathered from viewers selecting news stories could be used to target ads to specific viewers and then the advertisers and news orgs could both come out ahead. There’s no way that I am the first guy to think of interactive video on demand news, but I would definitely be an early adopter if it ever happened.
This is just my news fantasy. Would you watch interactive on demand news? I would love to hear all of your other thoughts on interactive news too.
